| A while ago, I posted a video of the "rattling" noise I have coming from my engine. At the time I first posted the video, the expert opinion was "VTC noise," so I ignored it (the noise, not the opinion.) Here is the video: [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gd7DHdlKLFM&sns=em ] Here is the previous thread:
[ http://twinturbo.net/nissan/300zx/forums/general/view/2352563/Video-of-tick--knock.html ] Since then, I have tested the VTC's with what is described as a definitive test to eliminate the noise. That is grounding the green wire with the black stripe, WITHOUT unplugging anything. I confirmed that I was making contact with the wires using a test light, and when initially grounded there was an audible click. In my mind, I am fairly certain I have done this test correctly. There is no noticeable change in sound. I need further help with the diagnosis, as I can't stand throwing parts at a problem without reasonable expectation of a solution. The possibilities I have been considering are: - Belt tensioner - Rod knock - Noisy lifters - Valve noise? (suggested to me by someone else,) - VTC gears For me to believe it is VTC gears then I have to assume either the test I used is not definitive or that I have a combination of two or more problems. My current feeling is to do a 60k or 120k service and hope it solves the problem. It will burn my a$$ if it turns out it is, or also is, the VTCs and I have to do the job again but at least extra maintenance isn't wasted money. Your help is appreciated.
